Vellum Surrender dated the 27th September 1870 MANOR OF ACCRINGTON NEW HOLD The Helmut Court of the Most Noble Walter Francis Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry held on the 18th October 1870 before DIXON ROBINSON (Gentleman) Steward there PARTIES - ROBERT TURNER (Clogger) of Rochdale in the County of Lancaster and MARY TURNER (his Wife) BETTY WOLFENDEN (Widow) of Underbank near Bacup JAMES MADEN (Corn Miller) of Tong near Bacup and ANN MADEN (his Wife) and JAMES LORD (Mill Overlooker) of Brickfield in Bacup PROPERTY - (1) A plot of land at Rough Bottom and part of the Old Clough Estate Rossendale containing 280 square yards and four houses erected on it (2) One dwellinghouse one barn and other buildings and several closes of land commonly called the two day Math and one half of the Slack meadow the Black Field the Slack Field the Morse copy above it the nearer Great Rough the further Great Rough the Mill Hill two Gardens the Little Close at back of the House one half of the ? fence and free liberty to fetch water from the Spout By this document the property was surrendered unto the Lord of the Manor and granted to the use of the Purchasers This is an unusual document dealing with property in a manner peculiar to the area. It consists of one sheet measuring approximately 59 x 42 centimetres.
