Description

W.G. BEERS. LACROSSE. The National Game of Canada. Dawson Brothers (Montreal) 1869 First edition. 256 pages. 4 3/4" x 6 7/8" hardcover.

Illustrated with a wonderful double page William Notman frontispiece consisting of a montage of 12 photos of Lacrosse players in action.

William George BEERS (1843-1900), a noted Canadian dentist and patriot, is referred to as the "father of modern lacrosse" for his work establishing the first set of playing rules for the game. Lacrosse, the National Game of Canada, the first book on lacrosse published in Canada contains chapters on the origin of the game, a detailed description of the equipment, the different positions, and the skills required in order to play. An appendix reprints the rules of the sport. The edition is enriched by a double-page frontispiece which is a mosaic of 12 small original photographs by William Notman, the well-known Montreal photographer, showing players displaying various skills. The studio photographs also show how Notman used painted backgrounds to simulate actual outdoor shots. This publication is a relatively early example of how original photographs, instead of the conventional wood engravings, were used to illustrate books.

Bound in original green cloth with gilt Lacrosse sticks on front cover and gilt lettering on spine.

SCARCE, especially with the double page frontispiece intact, there are no other copies currently for sale on the net.

CONDITION: One side of frontispiece is loose but present, title page a bit stained, gilt on spine dulled, previous owner's bookplate on inside front cover, o/w a decent Very Good copy.
