On this
enduring book jacket is an incredibly rendered depiction of a war taking place between
Denmark and Prussia, during the German Expansionism. Prussia had invaded Danish
Ducal Territory known as Schleswig and Holstein, which eventually culminated in
the loss of much of Southern Denmark. The realism with which this has been
created is truly amazing. The sometimes horrific acts that are seen during any
time of war have been perfectly captured; the artist has spared no expense to
create details that are certainly evocative of a battlefield. The artist has
also masterfully created a wonderful depth to the work by hazing out the
background and leaving the figures in the foreground bold and very distinct.
The mat that was chosen for this piece is a dusty blue gray that matches the
blue tones in the foreground and the background. The extremely dark walnut wood
frame perfectly brings forth the earthen tones in the piece, but in such a way
that it doesn’t overshadow the work of art itself. This work of art measures
24” x 17”, which also includes the frame’s dimensions as well. This particular
book jacket hails from a 100th Anniversary edition and a rare find
in antique bookstores. This is truly a must have for any history buff. This is
a wonderful addition to any collection considering the price.
