A very rare cutter for creating or adjusting the recess for the case rim on a Snider chamber. Or, it may have been used for adjusting headspacing. In having a squared shank, this may have been for issue to Armourer Sergeants; equally it may have been used in the factory at the time of initial manufacture. I have not been able to ascertain that point. The crowned cutter has a tapered pilot for insertion into the chamber to keep the cutter concentric and perpendicular to the bore axis and the raised collar also helps to maintain alignment. Marked with Broad Arrow over WD. Another I have is actually inscribed with the details of its function and with a date of 1867, right in the middle of the Snider's period of main line service. It is in very good condition, considering its age and intended use; the steel is bright with patches of staining; corners are sharp with no bruising; if it has been used, it has been very sparingly. But this sold as a collectable item, not a tool for use. Length approx. 4.5 inches. (NOTE - Postage Insurance is available, cost depending upon final sale price. If required, please ask. Equally, alternative shipping options can be made available if required - again at cost)
