Ainslie's Map of Scotland on Nine Imperial Sheets by the late John Ainslie with Railways.
The 11th Edition 1841 (first published in 1789).
With two insets:- The North Sea - A Map of the Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands .
A huge folding map with individual panels on linen 257mm x 367 total size of map unfolded 1675mm x 1835.
Highly attractive with light signs of wear generally undamaged in very fine condition for this rarity, much sought after and incredibly difficult to find in this condition.
Original leather binding with gilt decorative border with spine a bit aged.
John Ainslie, prolific publisher of county and coastal surveys and estate plans, worked with Thomas Jefferys on Surveys of a number of English counties.
He later set up a business in Edinburgh as a bookseller and land surveyor. He is best known for his large-scale map of Scotland of which this is a very fine example.
