THE SIXTH EDITION- LONDON
William Howitt 1792-1879 English Quaker, writer, poet and pioneer spiritualist was born at Heanor, Derbyshire. His parents were Quakers, and he was educated at the Friends public school at Ackworth, Yorkshire. He was married to Mary Botham, also a Quaker and a poet and together they wrote numerous works throughout a long literary career. In 1831 he first published this work for which his habits of observation and his love of nature fitted him. It is a history of the changes in the face of the outside world in the different months of the year. The twelve monthly summaries include birds, garden and wild plants, insects, rural occupations and an angling calendar. This 1839 edition contains a total of 349 pages plus 12 plates each with a vignette illustration and a excerpt from a poem on the season, by different English poets.
