This is one of several original, rare, hand-coloured costume plates from 'Galerie Dramatique', that I am listing this week. This was published from 1796 until 1880, with the interruption of the Franco-Prussian war of 1871-1872. It is also known as "Petit galerie dramatique" or "Nouvelle galerie dramatique" and is considered to be the most important French theatrical gallery of the 19th century, with figures drawn by important artists. The early prints were engraved (as this one is) and the later ones were lithographed.
This particular plate is number 960, published in August 1835. It shows the Madam Pradher as Peki, in a fantastic chinese outfit. The engraver is Maleware and the print was published by Martinet, as usual.
Condition is very good. It has been mounted onto backing paper, and is well stuck down, so there is a little buckling and creasing around the edges. However, this has also protected the paper. Any patches of toning in the scans are the result of differences in the surface and are not on the print itself.
