The Gallery of Portraits with Memoirs

1833 - London - Charles Knight

11" by 7.5", 198, (1); 192pp plus plates

DETAILS

Two bright volumes of The Gallery of Portraits with Memoirs set.

Bound in half-leather with gilt lettering.

Volumes I and II.

Collated complete.

The Gallery of Portraits was originally published by The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. It contains portraits and biographies on 'distinguished poets, philosophers, statesmen, divines, painters, architects, physicians and lawyers'. Included are prominent figures such as Dante Alighieri, John Milton, Copernicus, Sir Thomas More, and Sir Isaac Newton.

The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded in 1826, was a Whiggish London organisation that published inexpensive texts intended to adapt scientific and similarly high-minded material for the rapidly expanding reading public. It was established mainly at the instigation of Lord Brougham with the objects of publishing information to people who were unable to obtain formal teaching, or who preferred self-education.

CONDITION

The bindings are tight and firm. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild bumping, with some loss to the leather. Internally the pages are bright with intermittent mild spotting. Overall the condition is very good.
