Rejected Addresses:
Or, The New Theatrum Poetarum

By James and Horace Smith

1821 - London - John Murray

7" by 4.25", xvi, 139, (4)pp

DETAILS

A bright copy of Rejected Addresses by James and Horace Smith.

Bound in the original publisher's boards.

There is a Wilson bookseller's label on the front pastedown.

Of Rejected Addresses, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography explains, "To mark the opening of the rebuilt Drury Lane Theatre after the fire of 1809, a competition was held to find an inaugural ode. 112 addresses were submitted, none of an acceptable standard", the Smith brothers had the idea "of publishing, anonymously, a volume of parodies purporting to make public a selection of the effusions rejected. In six weeks the brothers wrote the twenty-one pieces” and it became “one of the cleverest volumes of parody to be published in the Romantic period”. Parodies include Wordsworth, Southey, Coleridge, Byron, Thomas Moore, and Sir Walter Scott.

James Smith, 1775 – 1839, and his brother Horace Smith, 1779 – 1849, are best known as the authors of Rejected Addresses. After making a fortune as a stockbroker, Horace Smith took to writing historical novels, and his sketches of eccentric character are certainly amusing. He is also remembered as a writer of comic and occasional verse and prose. James Smith was a solicitor and a writer of comic verse and prose for periodicals.

CONDITION

The binding is tight and firm. There is mild wear to the extremities, including mild bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are generally bright, with the occasional slight spotting. Overall the condition is very good.
