The Royal Family of France in the Temple

 Translated from the French

London
 John Murray
1817

This narrative first published in French in 1817 was written by the only survivor of the prisoners of the Temple, the Duchess of Angoulême, Princess Royal of France, the daughter of Marie-Antoinette. This is the scarce true first English edition.
The entire family was imprisoned in the Temple Fortress in fall 1792 after the monarchy was abolished and during late September of 1793, they were separated. Marie Antoinette was transferred to the Conciergerie Prison. She and her brother remained in the Temple Prison in separate cells, never to see one another again. She was incarcerated in the Temple for three years and was divided from her parents, and her aunt one by one as they were sent to the guillotine. In January 1793 her father, Louis XVI, was sent to the guillotine. In 1795 she was exchanged for a number of French revolutionaries held by Austria. She alone of her family survived the bloody Revolution.
A key documentary record in the history of France, the revolution and the terror, and after Clery one of the most important contemporary accounts of the imprisonment.
