Jane Porter 1775-1850 Scottish novelist best known for her historical novel Scottish Chiefs and this work, based on eye-witness accounts from polish refugees of the doomed independence struggle of the 1790s.
All early editions of this work are scarce.

On fixed front endpaper of volume one is the label:
Bound by W. Forth, bookbinder and stationer, Bridlington, and a handwritten signature, Mary Coates.

condition
19th century bindings, leather spines and corners, marbled boards, spines with gilt decorations and gilt lettered titles. The spine of volume 4 is a lighter shade than the other volumes. Good solid bindings pages are in good condition, all complete with half titles etc.
Size of each volume is 6¾ by 4 inches.
