1815 rare dated curtis hand color engraving

Information

This original hand color engraving comes from a disbound book: Curtis's Botanical Magazine or, Flower-Garden Displayed, Volume 20, in which the most ornamental Foreign plants, cultivated in the Open Ground, the Green House, and the Stove, are accurately represented in their natural Colours...Pub.London:Sherwood 1815

This original hand color engraving is in good condition with some ageing present and strong plate marks-please see supersize image below. Printed on one side only on heavy grade paper, the page measures  9.5ins x 6ins approx. (24cms x 15cms approx.) and is dated with the imprint of the publisher, artist and engraver.   The original accompanying text is also available. A delightful and rare addition to your print collection and ideal for framing-these Curtis engravings are becoming more and more scarce and thus increasing in value.

William Curtis was a trained apothecary living in London, although his passion was for natural history, particularly plants and insects.  He maintained a large well-stocked garden and began the publication of the Botanical Magazine in February 1787.  It became the most famous and influential botanical publication of its type and it is still published today, making it the longest running scientific periodical of all time. Curtis edited the first 13 volumes, and was then succeeded by John Simms (1800-1826), William Jackson Hooker (1827-1865) and Joseph Dalton Hooker (1865-1904), the magazine continues in production today. The fine illustrations from this period of its publication were by many artists including Sydenham Edwards, William Graves, James Sowerby, John Curtis, William Jackson Hooker, and W.H. Fitch.

At first, the plants selected were predominantly European, but the nineteenth century saw a huge increase in plants being sourced from further afield by intrepid plant collectors. David Douglas (1799-1834), for example, collected extensively in America on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society. He travelled for eleven years, sending seeds and specimens back home at intervals; many of his plants flourished in England and were illustrated in the Botanical Magazine as they flowered.

As Curtis states in the preface to the first issue, the plates were drawn 'always from the living plant, and coloured as near to nature, as the imperfection of colouring will admit'. With little chance to exert any artistic freedom, each artist had to draw the specimens exactly and accurately in order to create a scientifically authoritative work.  The subsequent results, even after nearly two hundred years, are a joy to behold.
