Richard Colley Wesley, later Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley 1760-1842, was an Irish politician and colonial administrator, brother of Arthur the Duke of Wellington. He first made his name as Governor General of India between 1798 and 1805 and later served as Foreign Secretary in the British cabinet and as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. This work a defence of the Marquis Wellesley's policy in India was written by Sir George Dallas 1758-1833, a writer who in his early life lived in Bengal in service with the East India Company.
This volume has loss of text to 2 leaves i.e. pages 71-72-73 and 74, the top third of these leaves are torn off and lost, the missing text has been copied from another and is loosely inserted in the volume.
The ownership of three previous possessors of this volume may
compensate for the defects as its previous home was the library of Markree
Castle in County Sligo Ireland '' the fixed front endpaper has a Markree Library
book label'', and underneath is an earlier armorial bookplate of Harry
Verelst. Sir Harry Verelst Darrell 1768-1828 was the son of Henry Verelst the
Governor of Bengal front from1767
to 1769, and on the title page is a signature twice in the same hand : Coll
Harcourt 12th Foot, and, Major Gen Harcourt. What better provenance?
