This is, without question, one of the most interesting early antique maps of Far Rockaway, I've ever seen! It's a Vintage antique late 1800's handcolored map. The map is titled "Far Rockaway Town of Hempstead". This is an antique map and not a reprint or reproduction, and of course is from before the western part of Queens joined the City of New York, and was still joined with what is now Nassau County, which is why it's called "Town of Hempstead", which is now part of Nassau County. The map is a page from the old 1800's FW Beers atlas, and is page 111. The back of the map is page 112, and is of the area above Far Rockaway, now Inwood, etc. That map is titled "Westville or North West Point Town of Hempstead". You can display whichever side you would prefer.
The map is in beautiful condition, tight and clean, the photos wont show the true beauty of the map. There are no rips or tears in it. The map is handcolored, and the handcoloring on the map is period to the map, this is before color printing. The map is a fascinating and historic period look at this area at this time. The map shows the home and land owners, the business and industry, the few roads, railroads etc that existed at that time. Of course, what is now the LIRR branch going through, with it's former railroad name before it was a part of the LIRR, the "South Side Railroad" station at Far Rockaway on "Motts Lane" which is now the subway Mott Ave station of the NYC Transit Authority. It also shows the parallel competing New York and Rockaway railroad which ran alongside the South Side RR> The South Side RR was eventually absorbed by the current Long Island RR. Also shows the structures/buildings that were there at the time. The scans wont show all of the map, or the true beauty of this fine antique 100+ year old map. The size of the map is 13.5" by 11.5" inches. I did include a some maps excerpts from google maps below to help show the location of this map, as many of the street names are still in the old Queens street names before Queens changed it's street names to it's numbering system at the turn of the last century. What a great map for the map collector, LIRR or subway fan showing parts of the RR or now subway, or just someone interested in the old street names, etc of the area. The map will be VERY carefully packaged, and shipped flat, and between cardboard so it can not be bent, to ensure that it won't be damaged in shipment. Payment due within 5 business days of auction end.
