In the name of Shah Alam II


This coin was minted at either the Calcutta or Murshidabad Mint.

 

This coin was issued by the British Bengal Presidency under the authority of Emperor Shah Alam and was struck from 1793 to 1818 AD. Both sides have legend using the Arabic alphabet. 

 

Shown above is a beautiful gold coin minted at Murshidabad, Calcutta by East India Compnay. This is a machine struck gold coin popularly called Mohur or Muhar.

 

By the early 1830, the English had become the dominant power in India. The rise of British as the most dominant power after over a hundred years of turmoil, lead them to enact the Coinage Act of 1835 and for uniform coinage to be issued. Newly designed coins with the effigy of William IV on the front side and the value on the reverse in English and Urdu, were issued in 1835. The coins from that time onwards were minted in Western style showing portraits of King/queen of England.
