1800 A VERY RARE UNIQUE ONE OFF FARNHAM CANCEL ON COVER
An 1800 privileged entire letter.
From the Bishop of Winchester, Farnham
direct to the Isle of Wight, not via London.
Endorsed in bottom corner Free/BWinchester.
On the front is a fair to good straight line FARNHAM, 38mm x 5mm.
Next to the Farnham strike is an extremely curious contemporary strike in the same black ink as the Farnham of
23 12, 16mm x 4mm.
Which actually corresponds to the date the letter was written by the Bishop,
December 23rd 1800.
One theory is that as the Farnham postmaster at the time was also a printer by trade,
the 23 12 may have been some sort of check/date stamp applied by him.
The inks and print style are contemporary for the period.
A note concerning this specific strike has since been included in the new Wilcocks and Jay English County catalogue, Vols 1 and 2.
To date a totally unique and howlingly rare one off strike, no other known whatsoever,
probably never to be repeated.
