Measuring 23" high, 48" wide, 19" deep, this is a carved oak coffer which dates from the latter part of the 17th century (we think from the style of carving around 1680 or so). It has had replacement ends to the stiles, and the base, although the original planks, has had periodic repairs. It isn't in the greatest condition, but is actually in usable condition. The hinge pins in the lid are original, and bits of wire have been used to attatch the lid to the back of the coffer, but it has no signs of having had replacement bracket hinges of any sort. This is a real country period piece which would probably be best viewed prior to purchasing. You can view the coffer at 3. Church Street Antiques, Finedon, Northants, NN9 5NA (01933 682515). The opening hours are 10-5.30 tue-sat, 11-4.00 sunday. Buyer to collect from this location.
