This monthly periodical was launched in January 1782 by the journalist James Perry as the mouthpiece of the Philological Society of London, then passed to the proprietorship of the Shakespearean scholar Isaac Reed and his co-partners John Sewell and Daniel Braithwaite. A contemporary of the Gentleman's magazine it  contains articles and letters concerning literature, antiquarian matters, theology, science, biography, and current news, with sections in each monthly issue for book reviews, poetry, parliamentary reporting, theatre, and lists of births, deaths, marriages, promotions, and bankruptcies. The contributors mostly anonymous included poets, clergymen, physicians, novelists, dramatists, antiquaries, politicians and statesmen, civil servants and magistrates, and literary critics.

This volume contains 6 monthly issues containing hundreds of articles, each issue with its own contents page all complete with a total of 432 pages plus 12 copperplate engravings, with a 14 page index covering all the 6 issues in rear.

These periodicals contain useful contemporary  information which includes accounts of travel and exploration, military matters, world affairs, the theatre, and literature etc, with numerous biographical details of both men and women of interest in the late 18th century.

The engravings are full page views of Swansea Castle, Cowland Bridge Lincolnshire, New Church at Paddington, Palace of the Duke of Parma in Italy, Lord Dacre's House Blackheath, and portraits of John Bannister, Captain Faulknor RN, Thomas Lord Greaves, Beilby Poretues Bishop of London, Dr Henry Owen, Richard Polwhele, and , Arthur Young, all with accompanying text.

Condition
Original late 18th/ early 19th century binding with leather spine and marbled boards worn with cracked and weak hinges, foxing to some pages, 1 plate has tear tape repaired, 2 plates have heavy foxing, all complete.
Size is 8½ by 5½ inches.
