Thomas Sheridan 1719-1788 stage actor, theatre manager, and later a teacher of elocution. After working for twenty years on pronunciation and orthoepy he published the first edition of this work in 1780. This is the second edition, a large volume with an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, a preface, a section on prosodial grammar, then directions to foreigners, and dictionary with nearly 600 pages.
