An original 1787 print of " The King's House at Clypeston (or Clipstone or Kings' Cipstone) , Nottinghamshire". Antique copper line engraved print by Hooper and Sparrow.

Good dark image which would look great framed. This print is in very good condition and is on a sheet 12.5 x 8.5 inches (32 x 22 cm). The view itself is approx 6.5 x 5 inches (17 x 13 cm). with the text below and on the reverse describing the view. This print was published in an 1787 edition of "The Antiquities of England by Francis Grose". Due to my scanner the scan is a little cropped but in reality the print is complete with good margins.

Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin.

Clipstone is split into two general sides Kings Clipstone (formerly known as Old Clipstone) and New Clipstone.Kings Clipstone (previously known as Old Clipstone) is the older part of the joined villages and can be criticised for its virtually "undeveloped" area with only the local Dog and Duck pub as a social place to meet and a slaughter house. Both villages lie in the heart of Sherwood forest, approximately four miles from Mansfield town. The old village of Clipstone 6½ miles north-east of Mansfield is a place of history, part of the Sherwood Forest and was part of the Duke of Portland's large estate. Sherwood Forest contained hunting parks created to preserve game largely for the pleasures of the hunt. at Clipstone a stretch of forest was enclosed to create Clipstone Park, 8 miles in circumference. A lodge for accommodating royal parties is known to have existed at Clipstone. Later known as "King Johns Palace". King John visited on five occasions, Richard I met King William of Scotland here in 1194. Only a small and somewhat inaccessible fragment of the venerable building now remains, is in this instance, somewhat accountable for the oblivion into which it has fallen,
