An original 1787 print of "Birkhedde (nowadays Birkenhead) Priory, Cheshire". Antique copper line engraved print by Godfrey.

Good dark image which would look great framed. This print is in very good condition and is on a sheet 12.5 x 8.5 inches (32 x 22 cm). The view itself is approx 6.5 x 5 inches (17 x 13 cm). with the text below and on the reverse describing the view. This print was published in an 1787 edition of "The Antiquities of England by Francis Grose". Due to my scanner the scan is a little cropped but in reality the print is complete with good margins. There is some foxing in the margins around the image but the image itself is quite clean.

Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin.

Birkenhead Priory is in Priory Street, Birkenhead, Merseyside, England. It is the oldest standing building on Merseyside. The remains of the priory are a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It was founded about 1150 by Hamon de Masci, 3rd Baron of Dunham Massey for the Benedictine Order. In 1318 the monks from Birkenhead Priory were granted ferry rights by Edward II. This allowed them to build a house in what is now Water Street to store their corn. The house was also used by travellers for shelter if the weather was too bad for the ferry to cross the River Mersey. The priory's chapter house is consecrated as an Anglican church, and is still used for services. There is a chapel dedicated to the training ship HMS Conway. There is also a museum detailing the history of the site. The chapter house is a Grade II* listed building and contains items of Norman architecture. In 2005 the chapter house was restored. St Mary's Tower was originally part of Birkenhead's first parish church, opened in 1821 in the grounds of the priory.
