An original 1787 print of "Beeston Castle, Cheshire, plate II". Antique copper line engraved print by Godfrey.

Good dark image which would look great framed. This print is in very good condition and is on a sheet 12.5 x 8.5 inches (32 x 22 cm). The view itself is approx 6.5 x 5 inches (17 x 13 cm). with the text below and on the reverse describing the view. This print was published in an 1787 edition of "The Antiquities of England by Francis Grose". Due to my scanner the scan is a little cropped but in reality the print is complete with good margins. There is some minor spots in the margins around the image but the image itself is quite clean.

Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin.

Beeston Castle is a castle in Beeston, Cheshire, England , perched on a rocky sandstone crag 350 feet (110 m) above the Cheshire Plain. It was built in the 1220s by Ranulph de Blondeville, 4th Earl of Chester, (1170–1232), on his return from the Crusades. In 1237, Henry III took over the ownership of Beeston, and it was kept in good repair until the 16th century, when it was considered to be of no further military use, although it was pressed into service again in 1643, during the English Civil War. The castle was partly demolished in 1646, to prevent its further use as a stronghold. During the 18th century the site was used as a quarry. It is rumoured that treasure belonging to Richard II lies undiscovered in the castle grounds, but the many searches that have been carried out have failed to find any trace of it. The castle, now in ruins, is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It is owned by English Heritage.
