1735 Sanson map

Nicolas Sanson
South America map

Published by Zacharie Chatelain in 1735
for his work "Introduction a l'Histoire"

Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) was born in Abbeville where as a young man he studied history, particularly of the ancient world, and it is said that he turned to cartography only as a means of illustrating his historical work. For this purpose he prepared a number of beautifully drawn maps, one of which, after his move to Paris, came to the attention of Louis XIII. In due course the King appointed him 'Geographe Ordinaire du Roi', one of his duties being to tutor the King in geography.

After Sanson's death the business was carried on by his two surviving sons and grandson, in partnership with A. H. Jaillot.

It is generally accepted that the great age of French cartography originated with the work of Nicolas Sanson but credit must go also to A. H. Jaillot and Pierre Duval for re-engraving his maps, many still unprinted at his death, and re-publishing them in face of strong competition from the Dutch, who continued to dominate the market until the end of the century.

Titled:
Amerique Meridionale
With the legendary Lake Parime at mythical city of Manoa

It is an original copper engraved antique foldout map of South America from Sanson D'Abbeville published in 1735.

The map is being sold in its original uncolored state, rare to find since many of these maps have been colored in modern times.

Lake Parime is a legendary lake located in South america.  It was believed that on its shores was located the city of Manoa or El Dorado. The lake was searched for by several explores such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Alexander von Humboldt.  The lake was printed on maps in the 1600's up until the 1800s. It was believed to be somewhere in Guiana for several years.

However explorers were unable to find the magical and mythical lake, and so they declared the lake as being imaginary.
