1732. RARE MANUSCRIPT IRVINE 2, PAID TOWN NAME ON CVR.
A slightly aged entire letter, with a light horizontal file fold. Irvine To the care of the postmaster of Inverary . On the front is a very good clear example of the rare and highly desirable Irv 2 manuscript town charge mark. Opposite a manuscript 2, thus the total charged was 4d. Irvine manuscript town charge marks are known used from 1731 to 1738. This is a very early example of this highly desirable rare marking. MANUSCRIPT TOWN MARKS: ( the forerunners to the handstruck cancellations. ) Numerous manuscript instructional endorsements occur on letters prior the general introduction of handstamps. In 1725 Archibald Douglas became Postmaster General and from that year onwards manuscript marks are found more frequently. There is some uniformity in the later manuscript markings, usually consisting of the first two or three letters of the office name along with the rate to be charged. Manuscript Town marks are exceedingly rare and highly prized by collectors
