MEMOIRES
DE LA VIE
DU COMTE
DE GRAMMONT

CONTENANT PARTICULIEREMENT L'HISTOIRE AMOUREUSE
DE LA COUR D'ANGLETERRE, SOUS LE REGNE DE CHARLES II

A COLOGNE
CHEZ PIERRE MARTEAU
1715

This work first published anonymously at Cologne in 1713, was written by Anthony Hamilton c1646–1720, brother-in-law of the Philibert, Comte de Gramont
1621-1707, who married Elizabeth Hamilton in 1663. Hamilton was an Irishman of Scots extraction, he fought as a Jacobite officer at the Boyne, and settled in France after the exile of James II.
The first part of the memoirs, dealing with Gramont's life on the Continent down to the time of his banishment from the French court, was probably dictated by Gramont to Hamilton. The second part, relating to the English court of Charles II, an imaginative and scandalous history of the restoration court. appears to be Hamilton's own work.

This 1715 edition containing a total of 430 pages plus the title page has the armorial bookplate of James Whatman ,England's most famous paper maker, on the fixed front endpaper.

Condition
Original early 18th century full leather binding, spine with raised bands and gilt tooled decorations, leather has slight wear with slight cracks to spine, lacking title label , slight foxing and browning to some pages, all complete.
