Lovely leather bound copy with woodcut head pieces! It has been rebacked.
Abraham Cowley (1618-1667) was one of the most highly esteemed English poets of his time; his contemporary John Milton ranked him with Shakespeare and Spenser as the three greatest English poets. Yet his reputation perished very soon after he did. His brilliance was intellectual but not poetical, and readers soon tired of his arid wit. Despite Cowley's central role in the development of English poetry, it is his graceful prose Essays (here included) that are most often read today.
CONDITION
