TWO BOOKS:
THE OTHER STYLED, SIR THOMAS
MANWARING'S
PRINTED IN THE YEAR First edition
Sir Peter Leycester, 1st Baronet also known as Sir Peter Leicester1614 – 1678 was an English antiquarian and historian. He was involved in the English Civil War on the royalist side and was subsequently made a baronet. He later compiled one of the earliest histories of the county of Cheshire and as a result of this became involved in a controversy with the Mainwaring family. In the book Leycester presented a discussion relating to the legitimacy of Amicia, the wife of Ralph Mainwaring, as to whether or not she was the lawful daughter of Earl Hugh Cyveliok. This led to a dispute with Sir Thomas Mainwaring of Peover, first baronet 1623–1689, antiquary and local politician one of her descendants, who in 1673 published a Defence of Amicia. Leycester replied later that year with An Answer to the Book of Sir Thomas Manwarings. After this there followed a paper war of 15 pamphlets. In 1675 the justices itinerant at Chester assizes declared in favour of Amicia's legitimacy. A rare item in the Chester Controversy, a portion of the 17th literature debating the legitimacy of Mainwaring's 11th century forbearer, invoking authorities from Glanvill to Coke and attracting Dugdale's support, and using much on medieval law and history. Two tracts, the second has its own title page and page numbering. The first has a main title page, a 3 page preface, then 96 pages, the second, a title page, a 3 page dedication in Latin, then 51 pages, plus a 2 page errata to both works, all complete. Early handwritten inscription on blank last page: For John Swinton of Knotsford (Knutsford) This is the rare first edition. These tract were republished by the Chetham Society in the 1860s.
