DETAILS

An incomplete first edition of Nathaniel Hardy's sermon.

Disbound.

A nice clean copy.

First edition.

Very scarce.

First 22 pages of 52 page sermon.

Nathaniel Hardy (1619–1670) was dean of Rochester. He was on of the few unmolested royalists. He preached on a variety of notable occasions.

In 1646 he preached at the anniversary sermon of the Gunpowder Plot, and he turned it into a condemnation of the civil war.

During the Commonwealth and the protectorate Hardy became a favourite preacher of the royalists or neo-royalists. He preached at the funerals of Sir John Gayre in 1649 and Richard Goddard in 1653. In 1654 he preached on the Act Sunday at the University of Oxford.

In 1653 and 1658 he delivered farewell sermons respectively for the voyages of Sir Thomas Bendish, the English resident at Constantinople, and Nathaniel Wych, president of the East India Company.

On 27 May 1658 he preached at the yearly feast of native London citizens, and on 13 June, five days after the execution of Dr John Hewit for royalist conspiracy, he preached what was generally thought to be Hewit's funeral sermon at St Gregory by Paul.
