This original engraving is in good condition with some ageing present and strong plate marks-please see supersize image below. Printed on one side only on heavy grade paper, the page measures 15ins x 9ins approx. (38cms x 23cms approx.).  The image of the title page is reproduced for reference only but a photocopy of the title page will be provided for authentication. A delightful and rare addition to your print collection and ideal for framing.  Single Merian engravings from this work can sell for in excess of $200 depending on subject and condition.

Jon Jonston (1603 - 1675) was born in Poland of Scottish descent, he was primarily a medic and natural historian. His works on natural history were of great importance to the growing interest in this field at the time.  Historiae Naturalis was Jonston's magnificent and richly illustrated compilation of natural history, attempting to illustrate every known species, with all the engravings carried out by Kaspar and Mattheus Merian
