HUMAYUN (1530-1556) Nasir-ud-din Muhammad Humayun, the eldest son of Babur, succeeded him to the throne in 1530. Humayun encountered massive difficulties in his efforts to retain and expand Babur’s conquests in India. In 1540, Sher Khan Sur an extremely able Afghan noble and an acknowledged Leader of the Afghan resistance against the Mughals, finding in Humayun a weak ruler by a clever mixture of political and military strategy defeated the Mughals at Kanauj. During the next fifteen years. Humayun remained in exile. Finally in mid 1555 Humayun was able to defeat the Afghans and restore Babur’s monarchy. Although he had recovered his kingdom, he was not destined to rule the same for long. In 1556, he met his tragic end by slipping from his library building at Delhi.
