"HISTORY OF BINDI" The 'Bindi' has gone down in history from a traditional 'dot' form to the most fascinating and colorful designs, befitting ethnic and modern Indian apparels. The 'Bindi' is a vermilion mark between the eyebrows worn by the Indian woman, creating a focal point and lighting up the face. The word 'Bindi' is derived from the Sanskrit word- Bindu, meaning the central point or the mystic third eye. This charming adornment denotes the married status of a woman. It is also supposed to be an auspicious symbol warding off misfortune or bad omens. It is stated in the ancient Tantric philosophy that the latent energies generated (during meditation) at the base of the spine rises up the spinal cord and released between the eye brows. The central point, the bindu, thus becomes a possible outlet for this potent energy. This point also called the Bindu is thepoint of latent wisdom. It is believed that the red kumkum powder (perfectly circular) between the eyebrows retains this energy in the human body. Over 5000 years, a reference to the usage of Bindis or kumkum has been made related to Draupadi in Mahabharata and in temples related to Vaishnavites, Shakti and Lakshmi. The Bindi is also known as Tilaka or Sindhura in various regions of India. It is believed that the color red signifies love. During weddings, the groom is also supposed to wear the Tilaka as does the bride. When the bride is widowed by misfortune the bindi is wiped off her fore head, communicating silently about her widowhood. The traditional Bindi is a fashion statement in itself. It has swept the modern dress designers in India and even the celebrities of the West. They come in various colorful and intricate patterns and enhance the fashion co-efficient. The Bindi has evolved a long way through time and carved its niche for religious and scientific reasons.
