Cassini's Historical map series covers the whole of England and Wales. The Ordnance Survey 'Revised New Series' coloured edition was first published between 1896 and 1904 - a period which saw Britain at the height of its imperial prosperity, with a rail network around twice the size of today's and with all of its major cities and towns now well established but without much of the suburban sprawl that has since engulfed much of the surrounding countryside. The Revised New Series was the first of OS's mapping to experiment with the possibilities of colour printing and so provides a stunningly different view of the landscape from any which had gone before. For family historians the series will be particularly significant as it captures the period revealed by the 1901 Census.    

The central feature of these Historical Map series is that the originals have been combined, re-scaled and re-projected exactly to match Ordnance Survery's modern-day Landrangers®. They even have the same map identification number and the same British National Grid references. This enables direct comparison of the past and present in a way not possible with maps of different specifications. They are the same size as the Landrangers® when open or folded and have a similar laminated colour cover.
