Using plastic replacement eggs cut down the number of deaths in young birds. Canaries lay an egg every day until 4 or 5 eggs have been laid. The odd canary will not start incubating until the last egg is layed. The majority will start incubating from day one which will mean the eggs will hatch 1 a day and when the chicks are older where will be a big different in size between the birds. The largest and strongest birds with the highest head will be fed and the others will starve.

Carefully removing the layed eggs with a small spoon (not my hand as germs on our hands can kill the embrio as the shell is porous) on day of laying and replacing them with a plastic egg.

When all eggs are layed usually 4/5 the plastic eggs should be removed and the original eggs replaced. This will guarantee all the eggs will hatch about the same time.
