In old Norse, the word Viking
meant "pirate". Was the name
given to the people from Norway,
Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
They were fierce warriors who
terrorized Europe from circa
800 to about 1100 AD
Viking sailors explored much
of the North Atlantic Ocean.
Their ships carried settlers
to Iceland and Greenland.
They controlled, at least
temporarily, most of the
Baltic Coast, much of inland
Russia, Normandy in France,
England, the Netherlands,
southern and Italy
According to the sagas,
at precisely 1000 AD ,
Leif Ericson, Son of
notorious Erik the Red,
Landed in North America
about 500 years before
Christopher Columbus
arrived in 1492.
Vikings established at
least one settlement in
North America, but it
lasted only a few years.
