Item Description:
These are magnets that are a direct result of my recycling.
As I dis-assemble hard disk drives, these get put in a bucket.
As the bucket gets full, I sort out some nice lots to put up for sale.
Magnets are still attached to the metal mounting plate; not much bigger than magnets usually.
They can be removed by holding magnet in the palm of your hand, magnets down and tapping with a hammer (solid surface may break magnets)
This listing is for:
5 plate assemblies with 2 magnets per assembly. for a total of 10 magnets. magnets are chrome in color.
Unable to photo magnet well, magnets plates are lighly riveted together. see shape trace on top of lower right magnet
widest point 1-3/8
narrowest width about 3/8"
height (thickness) 1/16"
!!! these magnets are VERY VERY strong and WILL pinch fingers etc. !!!
These magnets can / WILL erase credit cards, mess with the color on tv and monitors. will erase cassete, vcr, backup tapes and floppy disks !!! keep away from all magnetic storage devices !!!
Shipping Note:
Magnets are shipped in a larger than needed box.
This keeps the magnetic fields inside the box and away from erasable magnetic media during shipping.
Where is North?: To put it simply, North is to the left. Seriously.
If the magnet is laying flat on its back, with one of the largest surfaces facing up at you, then following the rough curve of the magnet; North will be either on the left or right side.
I know confusing; ok! I just experimented, and here is the answer.
I made a crude compass. I took a tupperware bowl, a 44oz 7-eleven soda cup, and one of the magnets that I tapped off the plate.
First I laid the magnet flat in the cut off cup bottom (about 1.5" tall) ,and the cup into the tupperware container with water in it. When floating free, the left side was pointing to the north.
I then took the magnet and a piece of gum and mounted the magnet on its back (skinny side) and again the left side found North.
This was done to verify that the field orientation is not top to bottom (if it had been, the left side would have pointed to either East or West.)
Tapping with the hammer doesnt work with the magnets I got! help!!:
OK, I did a little experimenting (again) coca cola will not dissolve the adhesive / epoxy used to hold the magnets in place. Acetone (in form of purple nail polish remover) does not work either. On an odd side note, the white epoxy absorbed the purple dye out of the acetone. The thing that does seem to work, is the oven. Put the wire rack as close to the top broiler coil as possible. Then put the magnets on the rack (no tray, they are magnetic and will stick) with the slots vertical (the radiated heat would then go down straight through the slots) after about 10-15 minutes, the epoxy undergoes a chemical change. I removed the magnet from the oven, holding the unit in a pair of pliers. (didnt have oven glove) I was easily able to scrape out the epoxy; it just turned to powder. After removing all visible adhesive, (do while hot, as when cooled, the epoxy reverts to a strong solid (not as strong as it used to be but doesnt turn to powder anymore)(In any case, the bond has been weakened.)) I was able to tap them out with the hammer. Or as one winning bidder put it. "I used a wooden skewer and the magnet slid right out."
Heat and Magnets:
WARNING - High heat for extended periods of time can cause the magnet to lose strength.
USES: Many and Varied!
Recharging alnico magnets
Holding tools to work benches and other work surfaces
Dragging lakes and ponds for your keys
Water conditioning (like iron from well water)
Holistic healing
Find steel pennies and steel coins (like coins from Canada) Chip collector for small engines
Hanging clothing, tarps and other things on metal

Separating magnetic black sand from gold pan concentrates
Refrigerator magnets
GEO-Caching - GPS treasure hunting. Just glue them where you need them and stick them to something metal - Great for City / Urban GEO-Caching.
Magnetize screwdriver and other tool tips to hold on to screws.
SHIPPING MAGNETS - Magnets can and DO erase magnetic things like video tapes (vhs and beta), they erase audio and data cassettes, they erase credit cards and atm cards.
Keeping this in mind, I package magnets in a larger box than needed for the physical size of the magnets. This allows the magnetic field to remain within the confines of the box and eliminate the potential erasing of tapes and credit cards.
Please also keep in mind that with metal backing plates, some of these magnets are very heavy for thier size and it directly impacts the cost of shipping.
