Short guide to rotary switch contact formats Poles and Ways The number of poles on a switch is the same as the number of sets of contacts i.e. a 3 pole switch has 3 sets of contacts. These sets of contacts are electrically isolated from each other. The number of ways in a switch is the same as the number of electrical positions i.e. 6 way switch usually has 6 positions. A 2 pole 6 way switch has 2 sets of independent contacts each with six positions. If for example position 4 is selected, both sets of contacts will be connected to position 4. If you are not familiar with the connections on the switch is recommended that you check the relationship between the common connection (wiper) and the contacts with a multimeter prior to installation. Write down the connections as this may save you a lot of time later. SHORTING or Make Before Break These switches introduce a momentary short circuit between contacts when the switch shaft is moved from one position to another. This is a desirable feature in most applications where for example in audio systems you would not wish to here a click in the speaker when selecting different switch positions. Shorting switches are not suitable for applications where a hazard may exist with a short between contacts. An example of this would be a meter selector switch that connects the meter to different power rails on a NON SHORTING or Break Before Make In this switch no short circuit is present between contacts when the shaft is turned. These parts are more suited to higher voltage operation and other applications where isolation is required between contacts. The shorting or make before break switch is more commonly used than the non shorting type but please check suitability before buying. WE STOCK BOTH TYPES OF SWITCHES IN 4 DIFFERENT CONTACT ARRANGEMENTS. PLEASE VIEW OTHER LISTINGS FOR DETAILS
We combine postage for multiple purchases and currently offer a postage charge of 25 pence for each additional small item purchased on the same order.
Buyers of multiple items of different parts please wait for an invoice or use the ‘request total from seller’ link. We currently have a problem with combined postage discounts that may result in you not receiving discounted postage. If you purchase multiples of the same part the postage calculator works fine but please check before paying.
Larger or fragile items such as valves and transformers do not qualify for these terms. P+P terms for larger or fragile parts will be clearly stated in the item description. Non Packing charges are kept to a minimum and are included in postage costs stated on the auction page. I will mark “Dispatched” on the day the item is posted. Unless ‘recorded delivery’ is requested and paid for, I am not financially responsible for items lost/damaged in the post. Proof of postage is always obtained from the Post Office. We usually send items as soon as cleared payment is received. Cheque payments may require 6 Bank working days for clearance, so please allow this amount of time for goods to be sent.
