ZEN SHAKUHACHI

Welcome to Yung Flutes Shakuhachi, home of Perry Yung, internationally recognized shakuhachi maker supported by both the American and Japanese governments to live and study traditional shakuhachi making and playing in Japan.

"Perry is one of the most creative shakuhachi makers I know. He has spent considerable time studying the basics of construction and his instruments rival some of the best in quality, but from there he takes the shakuhachi to new levels of freedom and, to our great delight, fun." - Chistopher Yohmei Blasdel, Kinko master, author of Shakuhachi: a Learning Manuel and The Single Tone - Tokyo, Japan

Hear the integrity of the tuning, response and organic timbre of this fully functional instrument.

Here is an old authentic Jinashi style Kinko shakuhachi made around 1950 - 60's in Japan. It is offered in my Tensei rebirth /recycle line of instruments and bears my stamp as it'sbeen thoroughly cleaned, evaluated and refurbished. Therre are no cracks. It is guaranteed to be a fine, fully functional authentic Jinashi shakuhachi instrument. This flute was made to play Zen Honkyoku music. It has a relatively standard sized bore so the balance between octaves is quite smooth. It goes to the second octave with a ease of playability and tone color manipulation for the experienced player. The flute is well in tune to itself around C#. Chi is also in period tuning being a little sharp. Nothing an easy adjustment with the Meri technique can't fix. Please know that most shakuhachi teachers in America will require a 1.8 length Modern Jiari shakuhachi to start lessons with. If you are in New York City or the surrounding area, you can start studying traditional Honkyoku with me on this flute. Feel free contact me directly or see my store for availability. A flute like this one is difficult to price because of it's historic nature. It can be priceless for some or worthless to others. You can visit my Me page or my website at yungflutes for more info on these instruments. The winner of this auction has my Lifetime Guarantee of customer support and the Best Guarantee in the World. Read about it below. Thanks for looking!

I often receive questions pertaining to the many kinds shakuhachi auctions on eBay, which I am always happy to answer. These days I find it necessary to direct interested parties to two eBay guides I wrote that will help inform the serious buyer of a fine shakuhachi.

How to Spot a Damaged Shakuhachi

Shakuhachi Consumer Guide

Proper utaguchi angles as expected by experienced players.

There is a little wear on the inside of the blowing edge that is not an issue of functionaliy so I left it as is to keep it as original as possible.

Clean crisp finger holes for Atari.

Beautiful Zen Wabi Sabi crafting with attention to nature as art.

  • Recipient of Japan - US Friendship Foundation and International House of Tokyo Artist Grant (National Endowment for the arts).
  • New York Council on the Arts
  • Ear to the Ground - Jerome Robbins Foundation Grant

In 2002, I received combined grants from both the Japanese and American governments to live in Japan to specifically study shakuhachi making. I studied crafting under Kinya Sogawa who was a live-in apprentice to Chikusen Tamai, the famous maker who apprenticed Hoshi Bonchiku, Yamaguchi Shugetsu, Tom Deaver and other professional Japanese makers today. Kinya also studied shakuhachi music under Katsuya Yokoyama, who studied under Watazumi himself. My understanding of making and playing evolves daily. I see that it will take a lifetime (or more) to master this wonderful and unique instrument. Visit my website at yungflutes for more information on shakuhachi flutes, playing, history, making, and repairs. If you bought a questionable shakuhachi, I will be glad to evaluate it for no charge. I specialize not only in making professional grade shakuhachi, but also repairing and restoring all levels of shakuhachi instruments. It is my extreme pleasure to serve the international shakuhachi community.
