F-Toys Twin Engine Aircraft Collection 3 - Assembled and Fully Pre-Painted 1:144 Scale Models of W.W.II.  CASE SPECIAL

This is your opportunity to own a miniature version of the USAAF Mitchell B-25C bomber in desert sand over azure blue cammo.   It has white tail number decals 58 representing "Pink Petunia" of the 12th bomber Group, 83rd Bomber Squadron while operating in N Africa during 1942

This superb twin engine model has well defined panel lines, excellent construction, and good quality painting, including pre-painted and installed bombs in the open bomb bay!

The inset photograph shows the model essentially as it 'comes from the box' with the major insignia having been applied in the factory.  A mini-sheet of high quality decals enables completion / customisation.   Please note, the aerials are superior to the mock ups hastily 'painted' into the photographs using a PC art package.

To further enhance the model, check out the decals in my e-bay store:  Decal Store.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

Constructed from injection moulded high quality ABS plastic, this F-Toys series includes four different World War II, twin engine aircraft with three variants of each, including limited issue 'Case Specials.'  There is also an additional lottery special which can be applied for with box tokens.

The Mitchell model is approximately 110 mm in length with a wing span of 143 mm (4.3" x 5.6").  It comes fully assembled and painted, requiring only addition of undercarriage and aerials.  Optional undercarriage parts allow it to be assembled with wheels raised or lowered.  Similarly, the bomb bay doors can be opened or closed!  It also comes with a mini sheet of high quality decals plus an attractive easy-fit flying stand.  This has a unique universal joint, allowing the model to be displayed in various flying attitudes.

Having assembled all of the models for phototgraphy, I can advise that the superbly tooled parts are a simple, albeit tight, push fit.  Liquid poly / clear canopy adhesive is advisable to fully secure the asembled parts.  As the use of a sharp knife is also required, e.g. to cut the undercarrriage from the mini-sprues, the models are unsuitable for children under 14.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The North American B-25 Mitchell was an American twin-engined medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation. It was used by many Allied air forces in every theater of World War II, and saw service across four decades.

Named in honor of General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation, the B-25 is the only American military aircraft named after a specific person. By the end of its production, nearly 10,000 had been built.

Although the B-25 was originally designed to bomb from medium altitudes in level flight, it was used frequently in the Southwest Pacific on treetop-level strafing and parafrag missions against Japanese airfields. These heavily-armed Mitchells, field-modified by Major Paul I. "Pappy" Gunn, were also used on strafing and skip-bombing missions against Japanese shipping trying to re-supply their land-based armies. Under the leadership of Lieutenant General George C. Kenney, B-25s of the Fifth and Thirteenth Air Forces devastated Japanese targets from 1942 to 1945, and played a significant role in pushing the Japanese back to their home islands. B-25s were also used with devastating effect in the Central Pacific, Alaska, North Africa, Mediterranean and China-Burma-India theaters.

The B-25 gained fame as the bomber used in the April 18, 1942 Doolittle Raid, in which 16 B-25Bs were led by the legendary Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle.  Doolittle was told to wave off his men but denied orders and took off in his own plane to become one of the survivors.

They launched from the carrier USS Hornet and successfully bombed Tokyo and four other Japanese cities without loss. However, 15 subsequently crash-landed en route to Eastern China. These losses were the result of the task force being compelled to take off 170 miles (270 km) early, fuel exhaustion, stormy night-time conditions with zero visibility, and lack of electronic homing aids at the recovery bases. Only one landed intact; it came down in the Soviet Union (where its five-man crew was interned and the aircraft confiscated). Of the 80 aircrew, 69 survived their historic mission and eventually made it back to American lines.
