F-Toys Twin Engine Aircraft Collection 3 - Assembled and Fully Pre-Painted 1:144 Scale Models of W.W.II.

This is your opportunity to own a miniature version of the Japanese Nakajima Ki-49-IIa Donryu "Dragon Eater" (Helen), Type 100, Model II Bomber, as flown by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force.  It has decals for 61 Sentai (Air Combat Group) 3 Chuutai (Squadron).

This superb twin engine model has well defined panel lines, excellent construction, and good quality painting, including pre-painted and installed bombs in the open bomb bay!

The inset photograph shows the model essentially as it 'comes from the box' with the major insignia having been applied in the factory.  A mini-sheet of high quality decals enables completion / customisation.

To further enhance the model, check out the decals in my e-bay store:  Decal Store.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

Constructed from injection moulded high quality ABS plastic, this F-Toys series includes four different World War II, twin engine aircraft with three variants of each, including limited issue 'Case Specials.'  There is an additional lottery special which can be applied for with box tokens.

The Ki-49 model is approximately 115 mm in length with a wing span of 142 mm (4.5" x 5.5").  It comes fully assembled and painted, requiring only addition of undercarriage and aerials.  Optional undercarriage parts allow it to be assembled with wheels raised or lowered.  Similarly, the bomb bay doors can be opened or closed!  It also comes with a mini sheet of high quality decals plus an attractive easy-fit flying stand.  This has a unique universal joint, allowing the model to be displayed in various flying attitudes.

Having assembled all of the models for phototgraphy, I can advise that the superbly tooled parts are a simple, albeit tight, push fit.  Liquid poly / clear canopy adhesive is advisable to fully secure the asembled parts.  As the use of a sharp knife also is required, e.g. to cut the undercarrriage from the mini-sprues, the models are unsuitable for children under 14.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Nakajima Ki-49 "Donryu" (named after a virtuous buddhist priest) was a W.W.II Japanese medium bomber.  A twin-engine, mid-wing, cantilever monoplane of all-metal construction fitted with a retractable tailwheel, it was code-named "Helen" by the Allies.

The Ki-49 was designed to replace the Mitsubishi Ki-21.  Learning from service trials of the Ki-21, the Army realised that how ever advanced it may have been at the time, their new Mitsubishi bomber would in due course be unable to operate without fighter escort. As a result the Army stipulated that its replacement should have the speed and defensive weaponry to enable it to operate independently.

The prototype flew in August 1939 and the development programme continued through three prototypes and seven pre-production aircraft.

In March 1941, the Donryu went into production as the Army Type 100 Heavy Bomber Model 1.  The model on sale here represents the Ki-49-IIa production version with Ha-109 radial piston engines.

Going operational from autumn 1941, the Ki-49 first saw service in China. After the outbreak of the Pacific War it was active in the New Guinea area and in raids on Australia.  Like the prototype, these early versions were armed with five 7.7 mm (0.303 in) machine guns and one 20 mm cannon.

Combat experience showed the Donryu to be underpowered with bomb capacity and speed suffering as a result. Thus, in the spring of 1942 an up-engined version was produced, fitted with more powerful Ha-109 engines.  This became the production Army Type 100 Heavy Bomber Model II or Ki-49-IIa. The Model II also introduced improved armour and self-sealing fuel tanks.

In spite of these improvements however, losses continued to mount as the quantity and quality of fighter opposition rose.

In the face of its increasing vulnerability to opposing fighter aircraft, the Ki-49 was used in other roles towards the end of the Pacific War, including ASW patrol and troop transport.  Ultimately it was kamikaze.

After 819 aircraft had been completed, production ended in December 1944.

There is some confusion concering the name "Donryu".  Although this was the name of a Buddhist priest (1556-1623), celebrated for aiding children in need, it is more likely that the Ki-49's name of "Dragon Eater" was to prophecy the plane's role in the destruction of the American dragon.
