1:144 Scale CafeReo BigBird Volume 4.  Fully Pre-Painted and Partially Assembled Replicas.

Kawanishi H8K2 "Emily" Japanese Navy Flying Boat - Model 1A.

This is a stunningly well moulded and finished series of WWII, Axis and Allied multiple engine aircraft models.  The replica on sale here is a WWII Japanese Kawanishi H8K2 Emily "Flying Porcupine", painted deep green on upper surfaces with pale grey underside.  It is equipped with twin underwing torpedoes.

The photographs shows the actual model which comes with the major insignia pre-applied in the factory There are alternative tail decals for two aircraft from the 802nd Naval Squadron

There is a separate sprue with pre-painted nose-array radar aerials, radio aerials, turret guns, wheels, etc..  These were not fitted to the model at the time of photography.

The assembled H8K2 model is a whopping 195 mm (7.7") in length, with a wing span of 265 mm (10.5").

SERIES OBSERVATIONS

These are injection moulded ABS models.  There are a total of 8 replicas to collect.  This includes two versions of the basic model plus a limited special variant of the He.177 and the C-47.  In addition, there is one rare case special Model #4:  a Ki-48 "Lilly".

Each model includes alternative, fully pre-painted undercarriage parts to enable either a wheels up or down display.  Each model comes with a sturdy fixed flying display stand.

While the major insignia are prepainted, the basic models come with a mini-decal sheet to allow alternative aircraft to be completed.  Please read the review in my e-bay store before applying decals.

Assembly notes

The models and all small parts are fully pre-painted.

Although significantly pre-assembled, some modelling skills are required to complete the models.  Designed to be a push fit, some pins and lugs may be overpainted and due to the tight fit may require light sanding before installing.   I recommend all parts are glued during assembly using liquid Poly.

As these models contain small parts they are not suitable for children under 14.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Kawanishi H8K type 2 Large Flying Boat (Nishiki Daitei, Nishiki Taitei) was an Imperial Japanese Navy flying boat used during World War II for maritime patrol duties.  Due to its fierce firepower, the upgraded H8K2, Allied code name "Emily", was better known as "the Flying Porcupine".

In 1938, the IJN ordered the development of a larger, longer-range patrol aircraft than the then newly commissioned Kawanishi H6K.  The result was a large, shoulder-wing design that is widely regarded as the best flying boat of the war.  Despite this, development was troublesome, with the HK81 prototype displaying terrible handling on the water.  Further prototypes refined the hull design.

The improved H8K2 variant soon appeared.  It had more powerful engines, a slightly revised armament, an increase in fuel capacity and search radar.  This was to be the definitive variant.  It’s extremely heavy defensive armament earned deep respect among Allied aircrews, hence the title “Flying Porcupine”.

The H8K entered production in 1941 and first saw operational use on the night of March 4, 1942 in a second raid on Pearl Harbour.  Since the target lay out of range for the flying boats, this audacious plan involved a refuelling by submarine at French Frigate Shoals en route. Two planes attempted to bomb Pearl Harbour, but, due to poor visibility, did not accomplish any significant damage.

H8K2s were used on a wide range of patrol, reconnaissance, bombing, and transport missions throughout the Pacific war.  112 were produced.
