Soar Art Workshop - 1:144 Scale, Fully assembled and Painted Fighter Aircraft Models of W.W.II. White 6 - 003
This is your opportunity to own a superb miniature 1/144 Focke Wolf Fw.190A-8 German fighter in splinter grey and green cammo, from the Soar Art Workshop in China. This is "White 6" of 7./JG 300. The pilot was Lt. Gustl Salfner. The aircraft displayed a very colourful blue/white/blue Reich band.
There are four Fw190 A-8 models to collect. Each model has a good quality mat finish with well defined panel lines. The inset photograph shows the actual model as it comes from the box. The painted figures, vehicles and other scenic items are shown for scale only and are not included in the sale.
For customisation of the aircraft plus tail insignia decals, check out the decal section of my e-bay store.
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS
Made from high quality injection moulded ABS plastic, the Fw190 model is approx. 60mm in length with a wing span of 72mm. It comes almost fully assembled including an underwing pitot tube, underbelly ventral fuel tank and rear loop aerial! The model has alternative push-fit parts allowing it to be completed with the wheels up or down. The canopy can be glued in the open or closed position. I recommend Humbrol "Clear Fix" or similar for attaching the canopy.
The overall quality of the model and painting is excellent. However, the main canopy may be somewhat fogged.
Is it just a coincidence that these models show the same markings as the excellent decal set released by Eagle Decals for use with the c.2004 newly tooled Hasegawa Fw190 in 1/32nd scale? The referencescame from the book Jagdgeschwader JG 300 Wilde Sau, a Chronicle of a Fighter Geshwader in the Battle for Germany by Lorant, Jean - Yves ; Goyat, Richard. The superb airbrush profiles of these aircraft and markings by Tom Tullis are worth collecting in their own right!
According to the Eagle decal review by Mark Proulx in 2004, which can be fully applied to this Soar Art Workshop series of four Fw190A aircraft:
The first Fw190, 001 is "Blue 13" of Major Walter Dahl, who flew this aircraft as the Kommodore of JG 300 in November 1944.
The second Fw190, 002 is "Red19" flown by Uffz. Ernst Schroder. Schroder was attached to 5./JG 300 in 1944 at Lobnitz, Germany.
The third Fw190, 003 is "White 6" of 7./JG 300. The pilot was Lt. Gustl Salfner. The aircraft displayed a very colourful blue/white/blue Reich band.
The fourth Fw190, 004 is "Yellow 17" of I./JG 301. The Balkenkreuz on the port side is not faulty but accurate due to a replaced access panel!
The Focke-Wolfe 190 was ordered by the Reichsluftfahrtministerium in 1937 as an addition to the Me 109.Powered by a 14 cylinder BMW 801 radial engine, this gave the highly effective FW190A its unmistakable (and for me, highly attractive) ‘short’ stubby nose appearance.
The first prototype was flown on June 1, 1939 and soon proved to have good qualities for such a comparatively small craft including excellent handling, good visibility, and promising speed (initially around 610 km/h). Its wide landing gear made it a more versatile aircraft than the Bf 109 and a safer one. Examples were delivered to front-line squadrons in late 1940 but the aircraft did not reach combat units in any numbers until August and September 1941. Oddly the Allies were entirely unaware of the new fighter and initial reports were dismissed as "Curtiss P-36 Mohawks captured from the French".They were soon disabused of this idea when the British acquired an intact Fw 190A-3 in 1942 (when Luftwaffe pilot Armin Faber landed on a British airfield by mistake). The British were quick to raid the aircraft for its technical secrets.
The armament of the A-1 series consisted of two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns mounted in the upper engine cowling, one MG 17 at each wing root and a MG FF/M 20 mm cannon in each wing. The A-2 series had the wingroot MG 17's changed to 20 mm MG151/20E cannon, retaining the other weapons. The A-6 Series replaced the outer MG FF/M guns as well for the more powerful MG151/20E, and the A-7 had the cowling mounted MG 17s replaced by the more powerful 13 mm MG 131 machine gun. The A-7, A-8, and A-9 had the option of fitting the very powerful 30 mm MK 108 cannon instead of the wingmounted MG 151/20E. These heavier weapons were more suited to attacking bombers. One version of the A-8, the A-8/R8 was specially developed for this task and was given extra armour to protect against the defensive guns carried by bombers.
